Save a Life Lab!

Today in science we did a lab called save a life. In this lab we had to build a life jacket for a miniature action figure using only a small piece of foam and a rubber band. After the we built the life jacket we dropped the man into water and he floated 4 of the 5 times he was dropped, so our design was successful. The reason it was successful was because we cut the foam in half and put one piece on each side of his body so that it was even. One thing that we could improve on our life jacket would be cutting more pieces of the foam and putting it on his hands and feet to give him an even better chance of floating. The life jacket causes the density of the man to change because it adds little weight and increases volume at the same time. That is how our man floated.

All About Machines

There are three different types of machines.  One of them is an ideal machine. Next, is a simple machine. Lastly, there is a compound machine. One thing that all of these different types of machines have in common is that they all make work easier.

One example of a simple machine is a pulley. A pulley makes work easier because they can change the direction of a force, this will make it a lot easier for us to move something. Another example of a simple machine is a lever. A lever will lessen the force that is necessary to move an object. One final example of a simple machine would be a wedge. A wedge can be used to  reduce the force needed to separate or lift an object. That is all about machines!

I wasn’t at school for the Rube Goldberg machine.
